What is a MOBI file?

MOBI is a legacy ebook format associated with Mobipocket and older Kindle reading systems. It stores text and resources in records inside a Palm Database container. Traditional MOBI7 content has a simpler layout model than newer ebook formats. A local collection of older, unprotected publications may still contain useful MOBI files even when the reader or service that originally distributed them has changed.

MOBI and AZW3 are related but are not the same thing. KF8 uses additional structures for richer content, and some .mobi files contain both a legacy and a KF8 rendition. The parser examines the actual records and uses a supported KF8 rendition when present. Changing a .mobi extension to .azw3 does not transform an older file into a newer book or remove encryption.

How to open a MOBI ebook online

Choose Open MOBI File above and select a complete .mobi that you are entitled to read. Desktop users can drop it into the same area. After local validation, the reader displays the book’s text. Open Contents for available navigation, or use Previous section and Next section. When the book has no usable publisher table of contents, numbered sections follow its reading order without pretending to be original chapter names.

Open Reading settings to increase the text size, adjust line spacing, limit the reading width or select Light, Dark or Sepia. The scrolling view shows one complete section at a time. Start of section returns to the current beginning. Close reading releases the current book; use the file button again to replace it. Cancel stops a pending open operation if the book is taking too long.

What to expect from older MOBI formatting

Old Mobipocket books were designed for different screens and software. Paragraph indentation, images, character encoding and contents links can vary between editions. Basic semantic headings, lists and emphasis are displayed, but publisher CSS and embedded fonts are excluded. Do not expect the same typography as an EPUB edition or a photograph of a printed page. A sparse contents list may reflect the original file rather than lost chapters.

Supported uncompressed and PalmDOC-compressed text can use UTF-8 or Windows-1252. Other encodings and HUFF/CDIC compression are not accepted by this implementation. Some historical variants and unusual hybrid records may not open. Embedded raster images are supported within resource limits; SVG, external images, audio, video and scripts are not rendered. Complex layouts and right-to-left or vertical content may vary by book and browser.

When to choose MOBI, EPUB or AZW3

Use the MOBI Reader for an existing, legitimate .mobi file in your local archive. If the actual file is .epub, open the EPUB Reader, which understands its ZIP package and publication spine. For a .azw3 KF8 file, choose the AZW3 Reader. These links select a suitable parser workflow; they do not convert a book or suggest that all three formats have identical capabilities.

An audiobook is different again: listening time depends on a recording’s duration and playback speed, not a MOBI text word count. The related audiobook calculator is useful when you have a recorded edition. For silent reading, use the estimate inside this reader and a pace appropriate to the language and difficulty of the text. There is no guaranteed duration for finishing a book.

Common MOBI errors and useful next steps

Garbled text can indicate an unsupported or incorrectly declared encoding. Missing sections or a broken ending can come from an incomplete source file or unsupported records. Obtain a fresh copy from the legitimate publisher or archive, then compare it in a compatible reader. A missing picture may not be embedded at all, or may exceed the image limits. This reader never retrieves a remote picture to fill the gap.

Encryption and DRM flags lead to an explicit refusal; the tool does not decrypt files. Other damaged files produce a read or container error rather than being mislabeled as empty. Files must fit 20 MiB, declared text 64 MiB, records 2,048 and sections 1,000. Each chapter is capped at 2 MiB and 30,000 elements with depth 32; resources are limited to 8 MiB each and 64 MiB combined. Images must fit 8,192 pixels per side and 16 million pixels total. An operation is stopped after 20 seconds; try a desktop reader for oversized books.

Read a MOBI book on a phone or tablet

On iOS, tap the file button and locate the book in Files; on Android, use the system document picker. Dragging is optional and is not required on touchscreens. A file stored with a cloud document provider may need downloading to the device first. This is separate from the website, which never uploads the selected book. Mobile memory limits can still prevent large files from opening.

Optional remembering stores only a hash, section, approximate scroll position and settings in local browser storage. Reopen the same file to continue after a refresh or language change. Disable remembering or clear this book’s progress to remove the record. Storage blocking does not prevent reading. Device emulation is tested, but physical mobile devices and every browser version have not been comprehensively validated.

Reading time for a legacy ebook

Estimate this book counts extractable body text separately from navigation and identifiable notes. Word minutes equal counted words divided by your selected WPM. CJK characters use an independent characters-per-minute setting; mixed text adds both estimates. Counting can be canceled and does not require waiting before reading. It stops at 12 million text characters or a 45-second overall deadline, and a failure does not display a false zero-minute value.

Older MOBI markup may not identify all notes or other ancillary passages, so treat the count as approximate. Image-only text is not recognized, repeated unmarked material can influence the total, and technical reading usually needs a different pace from familiar prose. Use the Reading Speed Test with comparable material rather than assuming a measurement in one language applies to another. No previous test result is imported automatically.

Keep your local archive private

The reader and fonts come from this domain. Ads, analytics and session recording are disabled on reader pages. Book files, filenames, titles and excerpts stay in the browser, while the restricted reading frame blocks active scripts, outside links and remote resources. Closing releases memory; a saved location does not cache the book. This tool provides no downloads, cloud library, conversion or DRM removal. Only open files you have a right to access.

Frequently asked questions

Is MOBI still useful?

It can be useful for reading an existing unprotected local archive. Whether a current device or service accepts new MOBI files is a separate compatibility question. This reader opens supported files locally and does not distribute books or convert formats.

Can I open MOBI on an iPhone?

Use the native file picker in a current JavaScript-enabled browser. The interface supports narrow screens and touch controls. Browser emulation is tested; physical iPhone, iPad and Android compatibility remains dependent on memory, browser version and the particular book.

Why are some MOBI images missing?

The source may omit them, use unsupported resources or reference an outside server. Remote and SVG images are blocked, and oversized or invalid raster images are omitted. Obtain a complete legitimate copy or compare it in a compatible desktop reader.

Does this reader support DRM-protected MOBI?

No. The reader checks encryption flags and refuses protected books before decoding text. Use an authorized app or an available DRM-free edition from the rights holder. Purchasing a book does not automatically establish that its file is unencrypted.

What is the difference between MOBI and AZW3?

Legacy MOBI has an older content model; AZW3 usually carries KF8 structures. Some hybrid MOBI files include both renditions. Renaming the extension does not change the content model. Choose the reader matching your real local file and its supported header.
