What is an EPUB reader?

An EPUB reader turns a packaged electronic publication into a readable book. An EPUB file is a ZIP container with a package document, a manifest of resources and a spine that specifies reading order. Its chapters commonly use XHTML, alongside images and navigation. A browser can display web pages but does not necessarily open an EPUB as a book without a reading application.

This EPUB viewer is intended for ordinary reflowable books: prose that can wrap to your screen rather than staying attached to a printed page. It reads the package’s spine in order and uses the publisher’s available navigation. When navigation is absent, numbered sections provide an honest fallback; they are not invented chapter titles or print page numbers.

How to open an EPUB file online

Choose Open EPUB File above, then select a complete, DRM-free .epub on your device. On a desktop you can also drop the file into the selection area. The reader checks its container before loading the first section. Select Contents to jump to another part, or use Previous section and Next section to follow the reading order. Start of section takes you back to its beginning.

On iPhone or iPad, choose the file through the system Files picker; on Android, use the document picker. A cloud provider may first download your own file to the device, but this website does not upload it. JavaScript and a current browser are required for reading. The guide remains available when scripts fail. Changing the website language requires reopening the file.

Set up an EPUB for comfortable reading

Open Reading settings to choose a font size between 14 and 32 pixels, adjust line spacing and limit the reading width. Light, Dark and Sepia affect only the book area. The initial theme follows your system preference. The reader scrolls through one complete section at a time; increasing the font changes its layout without turning the progress indicator into a fictional page count.

With Remember position enabled, reopening the same file restores its section and approximate scroll position. The saved record contains a SHA-256 file hash, location and settings, not the book text or filename. Disable remembering or clear this book’s progress to remove its record. Browser storage restrictions can prevent saving; you can still read. A different edition or edited file has a different hash.

EPUB 2, EPUB 3 and fixed-layout differences

Supported EPUB 2 and EPUB 3 reflowable publications can supply chapter text, a spine, NCX or EPUB navigation, metadata and embedded raster images. Basic semantic formatting such as headings, emphasis, lists and tables is retained. Publisher CSS, embedded fonts, scripts and remote resources are deliberately excluded. This makes the reader a simplified reading view rather than a pixel-perfect reproduction of the publisher’s design.

Fixed-layout picture books, comics, complex mathematics, vertical writing, right-to-left layouts, interactive content, audio, video and synchronized media overlays have not been comprehensively validated. Their appearance may vary by book and browser; SVG illustrations are not displayed. Use a dedicated compatible reading app when exact page composition or those features matter. An EPUB version number alone is not a promise that every feature will work.

Troubleshoot an EPUB that will not open

An invalid ZIP, missing mimetype, absent container or missing package document means the publication cannot be opened reliably. Obtain a complete copy from its legitimate source instead of changing its extension. Encryption declarations are rejected conservatively, including books with obfuscated fonts. This tool does not remove DRM. A readable edition must be supplied by an authorized source, or opened in an authorized app.

The file limit is 20 MiB, with 64 MiB expanded data, at most 2,048 entries and 1,000 reading sections. Individual entries are limited to 8 MiB, chapters to 2 MiB, compression ratio to 200:1, markup depth to 32 and chapter elements to 30,000. Raster images are limited to 8,192 pixels per side and 16 million pixels total. Processing stops after 20 seconds per operation. Try a smaller edition or desktop reader when these limits or device memory are exceeded.

EPUB reading time and your own pace

Choose Estimate this book after opening it. Counting runs separately from the reading view and can be canceled. For text counted as words, minutes equal eligible words divided by your selected WPM. Chinese, Japanese and Korean characters are counted separately, with their own characters-per-minute setting. Mixed text adds the two estimates. The website’s interface language does not determine the book’s language or your reading speed.

Navigation and identifiable notes are excluded, images are not read by OCR, and unmarked ancillary material may still affect the count. The estimate has a 12-million-character budget and a 45-second overall deadline; failure leaves reading available and produces no misleading zero-minute result. Use the Reading Speed Test with text comparable to your book. Difficult vocabulary, comprehension and illustrations can change the time substantially.

Private local files and safe book content

The parser and fonts are served from this site. Reader pages do not initialize advertising, Google Analytics or session recording. Book bytes, names, titles and excerpts are not sent to a server. Book scripts and outside links cannot execute inside the restricted reading frame, and outside images and styles cannot load. Internal links work only when they resolve to a supported book location.

Only files you have the right to access should be opened. This tool supplies no books, conversion service, cloud library, DRM removal or account synchronization. Closing the book releases its in-memory resources. Reloading the page requires selecting the file again; a saved position does not mean the book is cached. Your browser, extensions and operating system retain their ordinary access to local activity.

Frequently asked questions

Can I read EPUB files without installing an app?

Yes, for supported DRM-free files in a current JavaScript-enabled browser. Open a local file above. The reader loads its code from this site and does not install an ebook application or send your book to an upload service.

Does the EPUB reader work on iPhone and Android?

It uses a native file picker and a responsive scrolling view. Mobile browser emulation is tested, but physical iOS and Android devices are not comprehensively tested. Available memory and browser support can limit larger or more complex books.

Does it support DRM-protected EPUB books?

No. Encryption declarations cause the reader to refuse the file, including some font-obfuscated publications. Use an authorized application or ask the publisher for an available DRM-free edition. No decryption or DRM bypass is provided.

Can I change the font size and reading theme?

Yes. Reading settings offers bounded font size, line spacing, width and Light, Dark or Sepia themes. Reset reading settings restores the defaults after confirmation. These controls change the book area without changing the whole website.

Why do some EPUB images or layouts look different?

This is a simplified, safe reflowable view. External resources, SVG, publisher CSS, custom fonts and interactive media are excluded. Missing or oversized images may be omitted. A dedicated EPUB app is more suitable when the original page design is essential.
