What is an AZW3 file?

AZW3 usually identifies an ebook using Kindle Format 8, also called KF8. Its container is based on Palm Database and MOBI records, with additional structures for reconstructing richer HTML content. It is not an EPUB ZIP archive. Opening it requires a parser that understands those records, not an EPUB reader pointed at a differently named file.

The name Kindle covers several formats and delivery systems. A local .azw3 extension does not prove that a file is complete, unencrypted or supported. Some older .mobi files combine a legacy rendition with a KF8 rendition; this reader recognizes a valid KF8 header where supported. It does not support KFX, general AZW files or every variation of a Kindle store download.

Open an AZW3 book in your browser

Select Open AZW3 File and choose a DRM-free .azw3 from your device. Desktop users can also drop it into the file area. The reader validates record offsets, compression, encoding and encryption flags before reconstructing content. Once text appears, open Contents to use the book’s available navigation. Where no usable contents exist, sections are listed in the parser’s reading order with neutral numbers.

Previous section and Next section move through those sections. Use Start of section to revisit the current beginning. On a phone, select the file through the operating system’s document picker rather than relying on dragging. A document provider may download your file locally first. Switching the page language or refreshing requires selecting the file again; a saved position is only a locator.

AZW3, EPUB and MOBI serve different files

EPUB packages publication documents and resources in a ZIP container; its reading order comes from the package spine. AZW3 uses KF8 records and reconstructed HTML within a Kindle-family container. Traditional MOBI uses an older record-based content model with more limited layout. These are structural differences, not a quality ranking and not interchangeable extensions.

Use this AZW3 reader when your authorized local file is KF8. Use the EPUB Reader for an actual .epub and the MOBI Reader for a legacy .mobi. The page tells you when you select another supported extension instead of silently treating it as AZW3. Renaming a damaged or incompatible file does not convert its internal format or resolve access restrictions.

DRM and Kindle compatibility

Buying a book does not automatically make its downloadable file DRM-free. This reader rejects recognized encryption flags before parsing the book body. It does not recover keys, remove protection or offer instructions for circumventing access controls. If the file is protected, use an authorized compatible app or obtain a DRM-free edition when the rights holder makes one available.

For safety, this implementation accepts uncompressed and PalmDOC-compressed records with UTF-8 or Windows-1252 text. HUFF/CDIC compression and other encodings are not supported. Some KF8 variants, resource layouts and hybrid containers may still fail. An unreadable file is not necessarily encrypted: incomplete downloads, unsupported records and insufficient device memory can produce different failures. WordToTime is independent of Amazon and is not an official Kindle reader.

Make a KF8 book comfortable to read

Use Reading settings for font size, spacing, width and Light, Dark or Sepia. The initial theme follows the system preference and stays confined to the book. Headings, paragraphs, emphasis and supported local raster images can appear in the scrolling view. Publisher CSS and embedded fonts are not applied, so complex typography can differ from a Kindle device. Scripts, external assets and multimedia do not run.

Progress is a section and an approximate scroll position, not an exact printed page. When remembering is enabled, a local record stores a file hash, location and settings; it never stores the full book. Reopen the identical file to resume. Clear this book’s progress removes the record, and disabling remembering also removes it. If browser storage is blocked, reading continues without a saved position.

Why an AZW3 book may fail to load

A missing MOBI header, invalid record offset or truncated resource means the container cannot be trusted. Obtain another complete copy from its legitimate source. Unsupported compression, encoding or KF8 structures require a compatible desktop reader. If only a section fails, try another entry in Contents. A missing image may be absent from the source or intentionally excluded by this reader’s safety rules.

Files are limited to 20 MiB, declared text to 64 MiB and records to 2,048. Reading sections are capped at 1,000, each chapter at 2 MiB, resources at 8 MiB each and 64 MiB combined, markup depth at 32 and elements at 30,000 per chapter. Images must fit 8,192 pixels per side and 16 million pixels total. Operations stop after 20 seconds. Large image-heavy books may need a desktop app even below these limits.

Estimate reading time for KF8 content

Estimate this book extracts supported readable text in the background while leaving the reading view usable. Words are counted with language-aware segmentation where available. Minutes equal eligible words divided by the WPM you choose; CJK characters use a separate character pace, and mixed content adds both parts. No reading-test result is imported automatically or assumed to apply to another language.

The count excludes identifiable navigation and notes, does not analyze image text, and can miss the significance of diagrams or poorly marked ancillary content. You can cancel; counting stops at 12 million text characters or a 45-second overall deadline. A failed count hides the estimate instead of pretending the book takes zero minutes. The Reading Speed Test and text reading-time calculator help plan a session, while audiobook playback time describes a different activity.

Your AZW3 stays on your device

Reader code is bundled on this domain, and these pages disable ads, analytics and session recording. The file, its name, title and passages are not uploaded. Restricted rendering blocks book scripts, remote images, external styles and outside links; validated internal locations can still be followed. Only open books you have a right to access. Closing releases the book’s in-memory resources, with no cloud library or account synchronization.

Frequently asked questions

Can I read any Kindle book here?

No. This page is for supported DRM-free KF8/AZW3 files. Protected purchases, KFX, other AZW variants and unsupported structures do not become readable just because their filenames contain AZW3. Use an authorized compatible app for those files.

Is AZW3 the same as MOBI?

No. KF8 adds different content structures to the Kindle-family container. Legacy MOBI uses an older rendition, while some hybrid MOBI files hold both. The reader inspects actual headers rather than trusting the extension alone.

Can I open an AZW3 file on my phone?

Use the native file picker in a current browser with JavaScript. Responsive browser emulation is covered by testing; physical iOS and Android devices are not comprehensively tested. Memory, record structure and browser capabilities can still limit compatibility.

Do you upload or keep my AZW3 book?

No book upload occurs. Optional progress stores only a hash, section, approximate position and reading settings on your device. The file must be selected again after closing or reloading. Browser and operating-system behavior remains outside this tool’s control.

Why is part of my AZW3 book missing?

A resource may be missing or unsupported, the source may be incomplete, or the book may use complex KF8 features. Scripts, publisher CSS, fonts, SVG and multimedia are excluded. Compare with an authorized reader and obtain a complete copy rather than assuming every failure is DRM.
